What are you enjoying about your current IR book?

  1. Recently I started reading And We Stay by Jenny Hubbard. Emily Beam is confused and scared as she goes down the winding road of dismay and confusion. She was dramatized when her boyfriend threatened her with a gun and then took his own life. The memory of the day stays with her as she begins her new life at a boarding school in Amherst, Massachusetts. Even though she left Greenfeld County she still reminds herself about what happened in that hall. She tries to read into her boyfriend every night. Wanting to know what made him do it. He loved her or atleast thats what he told her. She remembers the days before the incident all seeming so simple but yet so complex like it was a piece of the puzzle.

    2. You do a great job summarizing the story, but I also want to know what you enjoy about the book. Are the characters well-developed? Does the story grab you from the start? That's what I'd like to know.

  2. The book I am currently reading is called Stung by Bethany Wiggins. It’s a dystopian novel. I haven’t gotten very far into the story but so far I am really enjoying it. It is about a girl named Fiona who wakes up in a world she doesn’t recognize. Her house is abandoned, everything is destroyed and her family is gone. All she knows is to conceal the strange tattoo on her right hand which she doesn’t remember getting. All that bear the tattoo are killed and those who are lucky enough to have no tattoo are protected by a fortresslike wall. All that have to tattoo have gone insane but Fiona is, normal. I really like the book so far. The book starts out in a place where you have no idea whats going on. To me I know just as much as the main character. I’m always wanted to know what’s going to happen next and that’s what I really like about this book. The book is playing a mind movie in my head and it’s as if I was in the story myself. I really like this novel and I am excited to see what happens next.

  3. The independent reading book I chose is Lone Survivor, by Patrick Robinson and Marcus Luttrell. I haven't gotten the book yet, but I should be getting it tomorrow. The reason I chose this book is because I recently finished reading American Sniper, by Chris Kyle. In American Sniper, Chris Kyle talked a lot about his relationship with Marcus Luttrell, who was and helped write Lone Survivor, which made me want to read Lone Survivor next. Lone Survivor is about a four navy seals who were ambushed by one hundred Talaban warriors. Marcus was the only seal out of four to survive the encounter. I am really exited to read this book!

  4. The independent reading book I chose is Story Thieves by James Riley. I haven't gotten very far in the book. I only read around 1/4th of the book. So far I dislike this specific book. The reason why is because this book did not meet my expectations. This book is about a boy named Owen who wishes his life to be full of adventure, like the ones in books. Everything changes when he sees his classmate Bethany climbing out of book! It turns out that Bethany is an half fictional character! The logic behind why I dislike this story is because I don't approve of the main character's actions and the way they solve there problems. For example Owen wants to get out of the real world and into his favorite series Kiel Gnomenfoot. Once he finds out that Bethany can jump through books Owen keeps pestering her about taking him there. When Bethany agreed to take Owen to his favorite book in the Kiel Gnomenfoot series they become friends, but then Owen jumps into a book in the series after Bethany and Owen have a huge fight which makes more trouble for Bethany.
I dislike Bethany because of her actions and rude behavior makes me have mixed feelings about her. Bethany is the social outcast of her school. This is because she doesn't want anyone to know that she is part fictional character. Once Owen caught her story jumping to look for her missing father, she acts like a spoiled queen to Owen and treats him like an underling. When they get into a fight Bethany spits out the rudest things to Owen and then leave him with a story portal to his favorite book. I mean who wouldn't be tempted by this? Then Bethany gets super mad and goes to save Owen. The only reason why I am continuing this book is because I only read around 1/4th of the book and there are chances that this book may get better. Also I hope this book will get better.

  5. I am currently reading The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa. The Iron Daughter is the second book in The Iron Fey series. I read the first book, The Iron King, over the summer, and I just had to keep reading the series! In The Iron King, Meghan Chase finds out on her 16th birthday that she is half Summer faery princess, half human. When her little brother disappears and is replaced by a changeling (a vicious faery child secretly swapped with a human child), she embarks on a dangerous journey to get her brother back and find out who she really is.

I am really enjoying the second book in this series. I am only 70 pages in, but the author has done so many amazing things to keep me reading. For starters, the beginning is very captivating. The author goes into excellent detail, and I can totally imagine the whole story playing out in my head. She’s done a great job making me sympathize for Meghan that I can’t wait to continue reading this intriguing story of adventure, fantasy, betrayal, and love.

    1. This sounds somewhat similar to a book I'm reading, The Replacement. Is there something specific about iron? In my book, the character is fatally allergic to iron, among other things.

You did a great job telling me about what you enjoy in the series! I'm curious to hear more about it.

    2. Overtime fairies (in my book) get weaken from iron and technology. Since Meghan is half human and half fairy, it doesn't bother her. After the first book, you understand what big impact iron has to do with the series, but I don't want to give the ending away!

  6. My current IR book is called The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict. This book is the prequel to the Mysterious Benedict Society series. This book is about a nine year old boy named Nicholas Benedict, and he is a genius. Nicholas has a strange condition where he falls asleep at random times and has terrible nightmares. He just moved to a new orphanage and is not liking it. He is tormented by a group of bullies dubbed "The Spiders" but Nicholas is smart enough to make up stories which allow him to escape.
I haven't read too much of the book, but I am enjoying it. I have read all of the book in the Mysterious Benedict Society series, but have not read the prequel. I haven't found out much about the characters yet, but I know more about Mr. Benedict. The three books in the Mysterious Benedict Society series are focused on four kids named Sticky, Reynie, Constantce, and Kate. They work for a man named Mr. Benedict, but most of the story is focused on them. In this book, I learned that Mr. Benedict was a genius. I knew he was smart, but I didn't know from such an early age. And I now see that Mr. Benedict chose these kids for the society not just because they were smart but also because they were at the intellectual ability to understand what Mr. Benedict needed them to do. The author does a good job of linking the prequel with the series and I can't wait to read more and learn more about Nicholas Benedict.

  7. The book I have started to read is called H2O by Virginia Bergin.

H2O is a story about a young adult named Ruby, who watches her loved ones become hurt with a fatal disease-rain water.

Ruby was enjoying herself at a party held by her friend, Zak, when she is swept inside by Sarah and Barnaby, Zak’s parents. Sarah and Barnaby proceeded to tell the teenagers that they heard on the radio that the rain water was dangerous and fatal.

Ruby’s boyfriend, Casper, doesn’t believe what her hears and goes outside to pick up his phone which was left next to the hot tub. When Casper comes back inside, he is in deep pain and bleeding terribly wherever the water touched him.

Sarah takes Casper to the ER with Ruby in the shotgun seat to be dropped off at home.

When Ruby got home her step-dad rushed her into the backroom, proceeding to tell her that she must stay there until morning. Ruby’s dad does not believe her when she say that she was not touched by water and was unharmed.

I am not very far into the book, but I know that I will be loving it, as I already do. Jennifer Bergin is a very talented and creative writer. I can’t wait to keep reading!

  9. For my independent reading book, I’m reading the first book out of the Ashes trilogy titled, Ashes. The author is Ilsa J. Bick, and this is the first book I’ve ever read from her. Ashes is a creepy, dark, and suspenseful novel, that leaves you wanting more, and there’s always new action every single page.
The main protagonist, Alex, is a seventeen year-old orphan who lives with her aunt in Chicago. Alex has a brain tumor, that she refers to as the monster, and because of that tumor, she has lost her sense of smell.
Alex is a very stubborn, empathetic, and strong-willed person. Before her dad died, they would always go on backpacking trips with each other, but now that he’s gone, she’s decided to go and hike in the middle of the woods, where they used to go.
While she is in the middle of her trip, she encounters a grandfather named Jack, his hateful granddaughter, Ellie, and a loyal dog named Mina. While they are talking, they experience a sort of, zap, or some type of energy or radioactive wave, that killed Jack, and traumatized the others. The weirdest part, Alex regains her sense of smell, and becomes stronger.
It’s interesting to see what Alex, Ellie, and Mina encounter, while trying to find safety, in the middle of this apocalypse. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys science-fiction.

  10. I am currently reading Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. This novel is about a boy named Billy, who has been saving money for many years to buy two hunting dogs. Once he has enough money he buys Little Ann and Old Dan. Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann begin to hunt on a nightly bases. Their friendship begins to grow stronger and stronger. Then Billy gets invited to the National Coon Hunt.

Here are some reasons I enjoy this novel. First of all I like this novel because the main character, Billy, is about my age. I also enjoy this novel because, I have fun reading novels about adventure which occurs several times in this book. My final reason I love this novel is that the author uses great descriptive words that help build me a mental picture of the setting. These are the reasons I enjoy this novel.

  12. I have been reading "After" by Francine Prose. It is a realistic fiction novel, with a dystopian twist. After a shooting at a school 50 miles away from Thomas Bishop’s school, who is the main character, rules, punishments, supervision, and privileges were drastically changed. Thomas has no idea why all these new restrictions have been implied to his school, even though the shooting happened 50 miles away. Going through metal detectors, random drug tests, and private sessions with councilors, have just been a few things that impacted his new life. Thomas decides to investigate why all these changes are in order, and finds something more dark and sinister than he thought. I am at the point of the book where Thomas is really fed up with all these new restrictions and punishments, and is about to investigate why the school drastically needs these changes.
The book has a fast pace, and an edge of your seat feeling. There are always new problems that occur, that could get his friends or him into trouble. How Thomas reacts to the situation he is in, is what always keeps you on the edge of your seat. You also start to worry about his friends, since they could also get themselves into trouble. I can’t wait to find out why the school is adding all these new restrictions, and what’s so sinister about it.

  13. I am currently reading Jack: The Early Years of John F. Kennedy. I am quite far into the book and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I love how there is so much detail in the book. I find it extremely engaging and I can not put it down. The book is about the young life of John F. Kennedy simply referred to as Jack. As a toddler , Jack fell extremely ill and had to be hospitalized for a very long time, strangers taking care of him. As a young man , Jack was of bad health with Addison’s disease. Jack had many siblings and was second born to the Kennedy family. He was loved by most of his siblings, but was never particularly close to his older brother, Joe Jr. Joe Jr. was raised a model child, one whom all the other privileged Kennedy children looked up to. Both Jack and Joe Jr. were very well educated at elite private schools. Jack attended Edward Devotion School, Noble and Greenough School, Dexter School, Riverdale Country School, Canterbury School and Choate Rosemary Hall as a young man. He was a great reader giving him a great view on the world.

I love this book because I find it very interesting how even though not many people can relate to his background as a whole, people might be able to parts of his childhood. Being stuck in your older sibling's shadow could be something you can relate to, or having an obstacle to overcome. The author gave so many details and put it in different perspectives that made it that much more fascinating.

  17. I recently started reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. So far it is about a young boy named Huckleberry Finn. In the very beginning they mention The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which I haven’t read yet(because I didn’t know that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was more of a sequel). But, because Tom and Huck found the gold they are both fairly rich. He is living with a widow who has adopted him. She dresses him in clean clothes and teaches him manners. And when Huck is finally used to the lifestyle, his dad comes back for him. He takes Huck to a house in the middle of the woods. Every time goes out he locks Huck in the house, leaving him no way to escape. When Huck finally finds a way to escape, he fakes his death, and runs away so he can escape from his dad and the widow forever.

So far, I’m really enjoying the book. Also, it was published around a hundred years ago, so the lifestyle of the characters are different. And, the writing is a little more confusing. At first I wasn’t so sure about reading it but I’m glad I chose to. There’s a sense of excitement, adventure, and immaturity.

  18. I am enjoying a lot of things about Palace of Stone. I haven’t finished it yet but what I have read is amazing. It is all about a girl named Miri who lives on a mountain. Her best friend is getting married to a prince in the kingdom below the mountain. To prepare for the wedding Miri and her friends go down and help the soon to be princess get ready. But my favorite part is when Miri finds out about a revolution that is stirring in the kingdom. I love the word choice and the suspense. But most of all I love the creativity.

Audrey, the main character, hides from the world in ways such as staying in her room, not talking to people that come over, and wears dark glasses all of the time due to her crippling anxiety. That is until, a friend of Audrey’s brother, Linus, stubbles across her.

Finding Audrey takes a big turn when Linus and Audrey unexpectedly fall in love. As there relationship grows so does Audrey determination to over come her anxiety. I cant wait to see if Audrey can work threw all of her struggles and if her relationship with Linus survives the journey as well.

  20. I just started the book Looking for Alaska. I am enjoying this book so far for many reasons. One reason is that in the book there is a "countdown of days" instead of "chapters". I like this because I think it is more interesting than regular chapters. A second reason as to why I am enjoying this book is probably because I won’t really ever get this experience or begin to imagine it so to read about someone actually having an experience where they can look for “The Great Perhaps” seems so cool.

The 3rd reason why I am enjoying this book so far is because while reading this book it is easy to get wrapped up in it. The author uses many descriptive sentences such as, "Florida was plenty hot, certainly, and humid too. Hot enough to make your clothes stick onto you like Scotch tape, and sweat dripped like tears down your forehead into your eyes. But it was only hot outside, and generally I only went outside to walk from one air-conditioned location to another." He goes onto say "This did not prepare me for the unique sort of heat that one encounters fifteen minutes south of Birmingham, Alabama," Later on in the paragraph the main character also explains that this heat made him " genuinely fear hellfire". All of that was on page 6 in Looking for Alaska. As you can tell not only did the author get the point across but he also gave me,personally, a feeling of extreme heat.. So for me personally I am loving this book so far for those reasons and many more to come.

I have just read the first chapter of the book so I haven’t got in too deeply. Roald starts his adventure on a boat from England to Africa. He was sailing on the SS Mantola to get where he is employed for his first job. The first chapter is all about his connections to the passengers on board. So far I love the stories that he is explaining, and the humor he involves makes the book enjoyable.
