What is your favorite scene in your IR book? Why? Be specific, and include a quotation to help support your ideas.

  1. My favorite scene is in chapter 16 in my book Story Thieves by James Riley. This chapter is one full of adventure. Owen, who is disguised as Keil Gnomenfoot, has to battle robot Science soldiers which are the strongest robot out of the many robots made by Dr. Verity, one of the anti protagonists of the story. Robot Science soldiers are robot soldiers that are equipped with many weapons for example nuclear bombs, laser rifles attached to there arms, they are programed to self destruct whenever there in danger, etc. This is my favorite section in this book because in this chapter Owen actually does something besides talking! It has acton, drama and is so exciting to read! For example this quote.
‘“ I’ve got this,” Owen told her, then ran through the spell in his mind. “ Hope you like your explosions ENORMOUS!” he shouted at the robots, the spell’s energy coursing through him. He raised his hands, then released the power straight at the robots.
And then everything exploded into fire and Chaos and awesome (page 132)’

  2. My favorite scene so far in my IR book is this scene. Nicholas has been secretly staying up late at night in his orphanage to go to the library and read. He found notes in a book about a telescope the founder of his orphanage wrote. As he found more clues, he realized that the secret treasure his friend John had told him about weeks ago was a telescope. By thoroughly studying the notes he finds that the telescope was once on the observatory of the orphanage, but he did not know where that was.
I like this scene in the book because it talked about a mystery in the story's plot line. Since the society he created is named "The Mysterious Benedict Society," I think that this mystery has something to do with the society. The other reason why I like this particular scene is because it initiates the feeling of suspense in the reader's mind. For example, the part where the book reads, "Instantly he recognized the handwriting to be Mr. Rothschild's. Nicholas felt his heart speed up. He fanned the pages. There were several more handwritten notes, each of which he read with mounting excitement." This line made me feel excited for Nicholas and I felt involved in the story. Up until this point there had not been a lot of suspense/action involved in the story, but now there is a mystery, which bring some suspense and I am excited to read more.

    1. I can relate. So far in my book there hasn't been a lot of action & suspense until chapter 16. So I understand your excitement.

  3. My favorite scene was on Valentine’s day when Emily was going to get K.T.(her roommate) a gift. As she walked into the makeup aisle she saw a girl pick up and slip a lipstick into her purse. For the first time since “Paul died Emily felt powerful. She doesn’t know who this pretty girl is, not yet, but she feels like she could kick her to Boston and back. I saw what you did, Emily says.” And as the girl plays dumb you can feeI the emotion. She’s mad, feeling powerful for the first time, wanting to feel like this everyday. I like this scene because it shows even though she had problems in the past it doesn’t mean she is going to be afraid in the future.

  4. I am currently reading the book Troubletwisters by Garth Nix and Sean Williams. My favourite scene takes place in Grandma X's house. Like Grandma X, the house is odd, old and mysterious. "Lounge, drawing room, study, kitchen," their grandma was saying, sweeping down the hallway like a ship in full sail, tapping on doorways as she passed them. The back half of the hall, passed the locked cabinets, was dominated by a number of stern- faced portraits that peered down their noses from the walls. Beyond the paintings there were two glass-fronted bookcases that, instead of holding books, displayed a collection of curious trinkets: snow globes, crystalline animals, brass ornaments, and the like, all arranged neatly but with no obvious sense of order." The next part I am going to quote is from the same scene just a different part. "It wasn't just the mystery of the blue door. Everywhere Jaide and Jack looked, strange details caught their eyes, like the compass wallpaper featuring letters other than N,W,S,and E- they weren't even English letters- and banisters that looked less carved than grown into long spirals." I was truly entranced by the detail given in this scene. I loved being able to imagine the interior of the almost windowless , three story home. I found the house fantastic yet chilling. I love this book so far, and this scene caught my eye, just as much as Grandma X herself. I can not wait to find out what secrets lurk in this old, mysterious home. I think that this scene describes a lot of the book.

  5. My favorite scene from my book so far has been when Ash, the Unseelie prince, leaves Meghan and Puck to find the scepter without them.
He half turned, as if to leave. The glow of the flowers made a halo of light around him, only accenting his unearthly beauty. In the distance, Ariella danced and twirled, free from sorrow and pain and the trials of living. “Go home, Princess,” murmured the Unseelie prince. “Go home, and forget. You don’t belong here,” (Kagawa p. 128)
This scene makes yet another obstacle that Meghan has to get over. I love when main characters have problems just like real life people. It makes the book enjoyable and interesting. This passage holds so much emotion, and it has so many wonderful details. That alone makes this my favorite scene.

  6. My favorite scene from my book, Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson, is when it is describing how the US prepared to enter war against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. It talks about how the US didn't want to enter the war, until the Taliban blew up two medieval statues, the Bamiyan Buddhas, which is tantamount to blowing up the Pyramids of Giza. Even then, we still were hesitant. Soon after, the radicals hijacked four passenger planes. One plane was intended to crash into the White House or Capitol, but the passengers fought back, crashing the plane in Pennsylvania. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon, killing 189 people. The last two planes were crashed into the Twin Towers, killing 2,606 people. Those hijackings shocked the american people into action, “ ‘the Pearl Harbor of the twenty-first century’ as the president described it”. The book describes how the US started to launch hundreds of airstrikes on the Taliban training camps and how the military were constantly searching for Mullah Omar and the infamous Osama Bin Laden. It talks about how we dropped BLU-82B/C-130, nicknamed the Daisy Cutter. This fifteen-thousand pound bomb, which must be dropped from a 99 foot long MC-130 (a military cargo plane) because it’s too big for a normal bomber, was originally meant to create instant clearings for helicopter landings in a jungle. Imagine dropping that on a terrorist camp, with its nine hundred foot lethal radius. I like this because it reminds me how loyal americans are to their country and will defend their homeland, stopping at nothing until we are safe.

    1. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the book. It sounds like an action packed story. I like how you gave some interesting details such as, the name of the plane, MC-130 or how the president compared it to Pearl Harbor. I can't wait to hear the rest of this book.

  7. I am currently reading a book call QB1 by Mike Lupica. The book is about a boy named Jake Cullen who's father and older brother were great football players. Now it's Jake's turn to follow in their footsteps. Jake is a freshman at Granger high and is a third string quarterback in his first game. In the first game Granger was going to play Shelby high school. It was third down and the starting quarterback for Granger was rolling out to his right when he took an off step and tore his ACL and was out for the season. This was in the first quarter with most of the game left left. Jake was now the backup behind Casey the new starter. Casey snapped the ball and threw and interception to Shelby and the returned it for a touchdown right before halftime.
Granger was going to start with the ball in the Third Quarter. Casey drove down the field and got a touchdown, 21-7 Grangers Losing. When Granger got the ball back Casey threw another interception, but this was his last. The Coach pulled Casey out of the game and put in the freshman Jake Cullen. With 1 minute to go Jake drove down the field and scored. The final score was 21-14 Grangers lose. This wasn't a bad lose for Jake, though because, he had just on the starting job. I chose this scene because, I can picture what it looked like really well and it made me feel good for Jake. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this book.

  8. My favorite scene from my book, H2O by Virginia Bergin is when Ruby’s stepdad dies from the fatal water.

Ruby and her stepdad, Simon, went into their neighbor’s house to “steal” supplies for themselves after they were running out of supplies to keep them alive. They thought the neighbor was dead. They were wrong.

Ruby goes to feed the neighbor’s cat. She see’s that there is water on the counter and she goes to feed it to the cat. Simon is currently about to pass out from lack of water so he grabs the water from Ruby and swallows it down.

Just as that happens, the neighbor appear. He was not dead! Simon is bleeding and dying. The water was a trap. It was fatal.

Simon and Ruby race back to their house. Ruby tries to save him but she knows there is no use. Simon was going to die.

Right before Simon dies he whispers to Ruby “I…love…you…Ruby”. This scene is so heart-wrenching because Simon and Ruby had a hard relationship. They always fought and disagreed, but when it came to a life or death experience, they bonded together and that was beautiful to read.

  9. My favorite scene in my book, Ashes, by Ilsa J. Bick, was in chapter twenty-one. In the previous chapters before that, Alex and Ellie are being attacked by wild dogs. As Alex has crashed into the river, and a giant mutt is about to attack her, a crazy man appears out of nowhere. He is described as filthy, with torn clothes, and a military haircut. When you first read that a man has just appeared, you feel like he’s going to save them. And, in a way, he does. You see, after the zap, some of the young adults, children, and teenagers were the ones affected the most. They turn into crazed, zombie-like, cannibals. Ever since Alex has regained her smell, she can smell emotions, and danger. These cannibals have a specific smell, described as a “hot, asphalt, and decay type smell”. Anyway, when the man appears, he charges at one of the dogs, and kills it. Another thing about the man is he’s very fast and strong, and acts animal-like, baring his teeth and growling. After the man kills the dog, he charges for Ellie, but Alex manages to distract him, and Mina, their dog, attacks him. As the man is about to hit the dog, another man calls for them to call off their dog. Apparently, the man was not affected by the zap, unlike the other guy. The crazed-man is suddenly interested in the other man, and as he is about to strike, the guy who was not affected, who later learn that his name is Tom, and the cannibal’s name was Jim, shoots Jim. I think this was my favorite chapter because Alex and Ellie finally found someone else that could help them, and it just made the reader feel safer about the whole situation. I am enjoying this book, but the only thing I don’t like is that the book is too gory for my taste. Other than that, I love it, and can’t wait to finish it.

  10. My favorite scene so far in my book, Going solo, by Roald Dahl was when the cook’s wife was almost carried away by a lion. One evening in Africa when Roald was talking to his friend, Robert they heard yelling outside. So, they ran outside to hear that, the cook’s wife was being ate by a lion! Roald and the cook started to chase after the lion. Now the eventually Roald would get tired, but the cook kept going after the lion and yelling at it. When the cook got closer he took his rifle and took a shot and killed the lion. When they reached the cook’s wife she was perfectly unharmed.

  11. I am currently reading a book titled Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella. Audrey’s mom is standing behind a window while Frank’s computer is balancing on the ledge. Frank is yelling at his mum to put the computer down, but mum does not listen. Neighbors are now standing outside their doors to watch. One of the neighbors, Ollie, who plays land of conquerors with Frank, has come out. Ollie, whose face looks more freaked out than Frank’s is now also trying to talk to mum. Chris, who is Audrey’s dad, has finally arrived home. When he sees the computer he freaks out thinking the computer is going to hit the car. “If you drop it there, you’ll damage the car.” Mum is getting closer to braking point as she tilts the computer even more off the windows edge. “I read you Win-nie-the-poo! All I wanted was a well-rounded son who would be interested in books and art and the outdoors and museums and maybe a competitive sport…” Frank cuts her off and yells, “LOC is a competitive sport.” He brings up winning a LOC competition where the winner gets six million dollars. “Frank, get real!” Her voice echoes around the close, shrill and almost scary. “You’re not entering international LOC competition, you’re not going to win the bloody six-million-dollar prize pot, and your not going to make a living gaming! IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” (page 9)

That is one of my favorite scenes because is gave me clear mind movie and made me want to read the book more. I also like it because the story starts with the topic and ends with the topic. It gives me a little information about the characters. Which leaves me wanting to read more.

    1. This book sounds really funny. I really love how you described the scene, I could see everything happening. I really love the moms character. She sounds like the kind of person who only wants the best for her kids, and I felt you really captured that. My only question would be, did you copy this from the book, or are these your words?

    2. I really liked this scene summary. You are making me really want to read the book. You choose a scene with suspense and drama which I think really multiplies the amount of people who will want to read the book after reading this. You wrote this really well, almost like a hook.

  13. My independent reading book is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. My favorite scene in the book is before Huck runs away from the widow that he was living with. Huck goes to see Jim (his neighbor’s slave) and asks for advice because Huck thinks that Jim can read the future. The book says it like this: “Jim had a hair-ball as big as your fist, which had been taken out of the fourth stomach of an oxe, and he used to do magic with it. He said there was a spirit inside of it, and it knowed everything.”

When I read the section I had to laugh because it seemed silly, but I know that the book was written a long time ago when people believed in witchcraft. The book explains how the hair ball worked. “Jim got out his hairball, and said something over it, and then he held it up and dropped it on the floor. It fell pretty solid, and only rolled about an inch. Jim tried it again, and then another time, and it acted just the same. Jim got down on his knees and put his ear against it and listened. But it warn’t no use; he said it wouldn’t talk. He said sometimes it wouldn’t talk without money.”

This reminds me of how some people are even now. For example, this summer I went to a carnival where there were “fortune tellers.” These people also wanted money to tell my future, just like Jim was doing. In the book, Huck ends up giving Jim a quarter (which was worth more back then). Jim apparently “smelt it, and bit it, and rubbed it, and said he would manage so the hairball would think it was good.” Although Jim is cheating Huck, he’s pretty smart. It was probably one of the best ways for a slave to make money back then, because people actually believed all of Jim’s crazy stuff about his “magic” hairball.

I like this scene because it’s funny and a little ridiculous.

  14. My favorite scene is in chapter 10 of Dangerous by Shannon Hale. This chapter is really detailed and intriguing. Maisie has just won a trip to the Beanstalk, an elevator that goes from Earth to the space station. When Maisie and the rest of her friends get to the space station they see that the astronauts have found something they believe were made by aliens. The crew insist that the “tokens” are safe. But when Maisie and her friends hold the tokens, the tokens go inside of them. The crew and the fireteam, as Maisie and her group of friends call themselves, go to try to see the if the tokens have affected the fireteam, they find that three of the five have been affected. We are now coming up to my favorite scene, which is when they find out what the effects are. One girl has super strength, another girl can shoot anything when it is put in between her pointer finger and her thumb, and the boy can grow indestructible armor onto his body. The only two who have not shown any effects are Maisie and her friend Wilder. This is my favorite scene because it was so funny, yet emotional at the same time. I also loved the way the author expressed the feelings of the characters.

  15. My favorite scene in my IR reading book, Stung, so far is when the main character Fiona infiltrates a military campus to save her friend's brother. I love this scene for many reasons. One being the amazing detail this scene acquires. Fiona slowing counting to three in her mind and bursting into the camp. Alarms pierce the air and she hears the voices of the militia shouting commands. I really like this scene because it really shows Fiona's character and it has a lot of meaning. When I read this scene, I feel like I am running through the secured camp and through the whole thing it leaves me on the edge of my seat. Though this scene is my favorite so far I really am enjoying my entire book. My favorite part of my book being that I never know what is coming next it's just something unexpected every single chapter. Which really makes me want to keep reading more and more. I can't wait to continue this amazing adventure as I continue through my IR book.

  16. My favorite scene in my IR book was when one of the main character’s best friends were being shipped away to a camp, since he was tested positive on a drug test. Before he went to the airport to go to Arizona, he told his friends that when he was online, he saw chat rooms and websites about kids being sent to camps like the one he is going to, and never coming back home. They remembered how a girl was suspended for wearing a red ribbon in her hair, and a teacher that didn’t tell the new director about a phone in a students back pack, were all never heard from again. I like this scene because that’s when the main character puts all the pieces together, and realizes there is something dangerous going on.
